I spent most of my first 40 years in the north of England, spending my time hiking and trail running. I have over 20 years of experience in Software Engineering, most of those as a contractor in London. I have been privileged enough to work with some incredibly inspiring individuals who taught me to see how the different roles in software delivery can either enhance, or work at odds with each other. I’ve made it my career objective to improve the software delivery experience wherever I can, through better development practices, better architecture, and better team structures.

In 2018 I emigrated to Brisbane with my family. I’ve been contracting here in technical leadership roles ever since.

Software Development

My languages are: C#, SQL, Ruby, Javascript/Typescript, Powershell, and Bash. I can also work with Java and VB at a pinch. I have over 20 years of experience in writing enterprise software.

I’ve successfully written mission critical software for a wide range of industries, from a book publishers to an airline, and I’ve ran development teams from a handful of people to dozens.

Solution Architecture

I’m very ‘hands on’ when it comes to architecture. I’m very comfy writing code to express my ideas, not just diagrams. I’ve seen poorly conceived architectures cost enterprises five or ten times as much as they should have done, both to deliver and maintain. I know how to design for ease of delivery and flexibility, and I’m experienced in both AWS and Azure cloud services.

Transformation projects are of particular interest to me. I’ve played a key role in breaking down legacy systems into micro architectures and streamlining working practices to enable such transformation.

Dev Ops

Dev Ops is a broadly misunderstood practice which impacts more than just development teams. I have helped a number of enterprises in their Dev Ops journeys, and I know where the pitfalls are.
